PROJECT: homemade packable winter shelter/TIPI made from a 9' x18' sheet of Tyvek, 30 plus FEET of nylon webbing, poly marine thread, a marine zipper, 3'x3' nylon stranded sheet and some GOOP glue.

Go Camping in a Teepee
Native American Indians were the people who first designed the teepee to be their homes. The reason they chose this design was for their comfort and convenience. They were the main two benefits to the teepee style, which were also called wigwams.
Because the Indians moved from place to place, they needed a home that was easy to dismantle and carry. The poles and hides could be carried by several people as they traveled to their new location. The slant in the teepee allowed the rain and snow to run off instead of standing on the roof. This helped the teepees last longer.
People today can use the teepee style for their tents when they go camping. They can choose from different models and sizes, but they all look like the Indian teepees with the slanted roofs.
There are several reasons to use a teepee style tent.
It is portable because the slanted design requires very few support poles so there are less parts to pack up. You can have the option of no floors or floors that detach from the rest of the teepee. Both choices make the load lighter when you carry it.You can find some teepee tents that are designed to allow you to use a stove or fire pit to cook your meals inside. Some of the teepees are small with head room only in the middle at the highest point. Others are large enough to hold furniture such as a dining table and seating.
You can choose teepees that have windows in them; you can also get ventilation from meshing in the roof. Most teepees are single-lined with lightweight material.
Some of the elaborate teepees have additions such as a porch on the front for extra space.Teepee tents are made for warmer weather because of the single lining. They are durable and can hold up in rugged terrain, but most are not made for severely cold temperatures.
They are made to be water resistant and are easy to set up and take down. You can carry them in the bag that is included.
They can accommodate a large number of people which makes them popular for group camping. Some models can fit up to twelve people sleeping inside. This is more efficient than everyone bringing their own tents.
